The Catholic Defender: The finding of the Major Churches

The Catholic Church was founded by Christ nearly 2,000 years ago. Today, if you look through any phone book in America, you can find in the yellow pages numbers for all the churches.

There are literally multi-thousands of Protestant denominations world wide.

They range from many varieties from semi liturgical or "Catholic lite" to congregational developments.

The following are some of the major denominations:

The Schism of the Eastern Orthodox took place in 1054

The Lutherans (and over all Protestantism) were founded by Martin Luther in 1517

Luther is the "Father of Protestantism".

The Anglicans began with King Henry VIII in 1534

The Presbyterian (John Knox/John Calvin) in 1560

The Mennonite (founded by Frisian Menno Simons (died 1561)

The Baptist (Ana-baptist Amsterdam 1609), John Smyth is attributed in establishing this sect, today they number nearly 100 different denominations.

The Methodist (John/Charles Wesley) in 1791 (after John Wesley's death)

The Mormons founded by Joseph Smith in 1829

The Churches of Christ founded by Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone in 1832

The Seventh Day Adventist were founded in 1863 primarily by Ellen G. White and her husband, James Springer White.

The Salvation Army founded by James Wilkes Booth in May 1879

The Jehovah's Witness formally founded by Charles Taze Russell in 1884

The Pentecostal groups are several different movements that began in 1901. Mr Albert Benjamin Simpson was one of the leading organizers.

The Non-Denominational churches begins in the early 1900's. This is from an advertisement "Answerbag"
"Instructions Things You’ll Need: Full and true legal name Legal address of residency Date of birth Contact phone number State registration form IRS Publication 517 IRS Form 4361 Step 1: Locate the religious order or church by which you want to become ordained. Many offer simple Internet forms to complete the process. Some will require additional education and membership,... more". Maybe I could do this on line? NOT!

The Church of the Nazarene was founded through C.W. Ruth in 1908

There are many more faces and many more denominations that spring up. There were reportedly 1900 denominations world wide by the year 1900. Since then, the number has grown between 25,000 to 40,000 denominations world wide with a rate of about 130 new denominations added each year. From these mainline Protestant and other denominations there arose thousands of groups.

The Catholic Church was commissioned by Christ and sent by Christ to go to all the nations.

Ephesians 2:19-21 states, "So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone. Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord".

Mankind is not bound by those who come up with new gospels and new denominations, we are bound by the Faith of the Apostles. Jesus promised His Church that the gates of hell will not prevail against it, that he would be with his Church forever until he returns. He promised the gift of the Holy Spirit and he made good that promise on Pentecost (Acts 2:1-47).

The Pope is the Lords "Royal Stewart", his "Prime Minister", "Chief Stewart" (Matthew 16:13-20, John 21:15-23) as he is entrusted with the "Deposit of Faith".
